When Quilters Knit: Why So Many of Us Are Hooked on Yarn, Too

If you’ve ever found yourself sitting at your sewing machine, binding a quilt, and then two days later curled up on the couch with a ball of yarn and knitting needles… you’re not alone. There’s something about quilting and knitting that just go together—and if you know, you know.

I’ve talked to so many quilters who say the same thing: “I just needed something to do with my hands that didn’t involve dragging out the cutting mat and ironing board.” Knitting is that perfect in-between hobby. It’s soft, it’s slow, it travels well, and honestly? It scratches the same itch that quilting does. Creating something cozy, something with love in every stitch.

And here’s the truth: quilters make GREAT knitters.

We already know about texture, pattern, and color. We understand patience. We’re used to turning strings and scraps into something beautiful. So picking up a new craft—even one with sticks instead of a needle—isn’t really that much of a leap. In fact, some of us go full seasonal with it: quilting in the spring and summer, knitting through fall and winter. It’s a rhythm that feels really natural.

Plus… can we talk about how much fun it is to shop for yarn? It’s like walking into a candy store. That same thrill we get picking out fat quarters—we get it in the yarn aisle, too. And let’s not even get started on project bags. (Yes, you absolutely can sew your own knitting bag. And yes, that makes it even better.)

Whether you're knitting socks, scarves, or just a wonky rectangle that you tell people is a dishcloth (been there!), I just want to say: you’re in good company. The quilting community is full of knitters. You’re not cheating on your fabric stash—you’re just expanding your creative empire.

If you're a quilter who knits, tell me—what's on your needles right now?

My latest pattern—Snowflake, is a cozy knit hat that’s perfect for winter knitting. I wanted something that felt timeless but still had a little flair, and Snowflake was born. It’s the kind of project you can take with you on road trips, knit by the fire, or gift to a friend. And yep—it’s just the beginning. A matching headband pattern is coming soon, and I’m building out a whole Snowflake collection.

So if you’re in your knitting era right now (I see you, seasonal crafters), check out the Snowflake hat pattern—it’s beginner-friendly, beautiful, and made with quilters in mind.
