Where do you get your inspiration? It's a common question whose answer can be as varied as the people you ask. However, if you were to ask 100 artists; painters, sculptors, woodworkers, candle makers, scrap bookers and yes even quilters and knitters, where they get their design inspiration I have no doubt the most common answer would be "Nature". And why not - have you met Nature? We are surrounded by beauty, balance, amazing shapes, symmetry, and color - oh the color - in the things that are found naturally. Animals, insects, plants, landscape, trees and sky and yes even in the people we see everywhere around the world.
It's no wonder humans try to copy or mimic nature. As a knitter I've have often purchased yarn that was hand dyed using color combinations inspired by nature. I find great joy in working with yarn knowing which butterfly, flower or sea urchin was re-created in fiber. As a quilter I find great joy in quilting for the seasons - yellows, oranges and reds for fall - ice blue with white and grey in winter - summer time always takes me to bright blues and sunny yellows, etc.
If you look to nature for inspiration you might look near and you might look far. It can be just on the other side of your front door or on the other side of the world. So go outside, get inspired. The season is changing, don't miss it.
