Fun History Lesson

In 1958, as Alaska and Hawaii were nearing statehood, a history teacher in Lancaster, Ohio gave an assignment to his students to redesign the national flag. A 16-year-old student, Robert G. Heft, used an old 48-star flag and $2.87 worth of blue fabric and white iron-on material to create his design.  The teacher gave him a B minus for the assignment.  Robert challenged the grade by sending his flag to Washington DC to be considered by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  According to reports, Robert was one of thousands to submit a flag design but the only one who actually sent a stitched flag to DC for consideration.  Once his flag was selected, the teacher rightfully changed his grade to an “A”.
