Summer Vacation Series - Episode Three - Jacob Goes To Paris

Escalate the traditional Jacob’s Ladder block to a new level …

all the way to the top floor!

Jacob is going on a whirlwind Summer Vacation. His third stop is Paris for the Summer Olympics! Come along and enjoy the splendor of it all. Make your own Escalated Jacob quilt to commemorate the 2024 Olympics - it's the next best thing to being there (probably not but still fun to do).

Did you know:

2024 marks the 3rd time the Olympics has been held in Paris. The last time was exactly 100 years ago in 1924. Before that was in the year 1900. The only other city to host the Olympics 3 times was London, 1908, 1948 and 2012.

The only country to host the summer Olympics 4 times is the United States.

The 1900 Paris Olympics marked the first and last time live animals were included in an Olympic event. Competitors could participate in competitive live pigeon shooting. The event was gross, and the killed nearly 300 birds. The gold medalist, Leon de Lunden from Belgium, killed a total of 21 birds overall. No wonder they never did that again. 

From 1912 to 1952 artists such as architects, painters, musicians, sculptors, quilters (not really I just thought we should be included) and writers would compete for medals.

The "Gold" medals have not been solid gold since 1912 - they are mostly made of silver.

The host City of responsible for designing the medals. In 2020 Tokyo made the Olympic medals out of recycled electronics. Let's here is for scraps!!

General Directions (to make 1 block):

Nine-Patch Units – with a variety of different colors and prints use nine 2.5” squares and stitch them together in rows of 3 to form a nine-patch unit that finishes at 6.5” x 6.5”.

Half Square Triangle Units – Using a background color and a main color, cut 2 – 7” squares of each to make 4 matching HSTs. Square them up to 6.5” (see Basic Beginnings for easy HST directions).

It may not earn you a gold medal but you can make our favorite Jacob Goes to Paris layout and become a champion in our eyes. You will need 20 Escalated Jacob blocks, a 2” black inner border and a 3” bright pink outer border.
